Important Steps After Arriving in Japan (Immediate Steps)

1. Official Registration and Documentation

  • Residence Registration (A-Z): You must register your address at the City or Ward Office (Shiyakusho / Kuyakusho) where you live within 14 days of arriving in Japan.
  • National Health Insurance ( Kokumin Kenkō Hoken ): This registration is also done at the municipal office. Health insurance is mandatory for everyone residing in Japan.
  • My Number Card: Apply for this as well. It is important for government services and tax payments.
  • Open a Bank Account: Open a bank account as soon as possible to receive your salary and for daily transactions. (Note: Banks often require a few months of residency in Japan before allowing you to open an account.)
  • Get a SIM Card: Get a Japanese SIM card to stay in contact.

   2. Invest in Japanese Language

  • Language Classes: Enroll in language classes alongside your work or studies, or study regularly on your own. Language is the single biggest key to success in Japan.
  • Daily Practice: Try to speak Japanese at work, in stores, or with your neighbors. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.

3. Understand Work Environment and Rules

  • Etiquette and Rules: Japanese work culture highly values punctuality, politeness (Keigo), and the spirit of working as a team. Understand these rules thoroughly.
  • Legal Rights: Clearly understand your work contract, salary, working hours, and leave regulations. If any problem arises, contact your company or the Labour Standards Office.
